Heckler & Koch HK4

The HK4 is a blow-back operated unlocked-breech semiautomatic pistol with a double-action trigger and an external hammer.  Its name is derived from the tool-free interchangeability of the four barrels in calibers 9mm Browning Short, 7.65mm Browning, 6.35mm Browning and .22 Long Rifle.  The gun consists of four main components: slide, barrel and recoil spring assembly, frame, and magazine.

The HK4 was the very first pistol designed by West German Heckler & Koch back in 1967. It was adopted by the German police with the "P11" designation (not to be confused with the underwater pistol of the same name). The pistol was produced from 1968 to 1984 and is based on the Mauser HSc pistol.

The pistol’s designation—HK4—identified a compact auto that could fire four different cartridges. They were .22 Long Rifle, .25 ACP, .32 ACP and .380 ACP. Americans appreciate a multiple caliber arm, but Europeans absolutely love the things. Many European countries limit the number of guns a person may have, but one gun that shoots four different calibers counts as just one.

The HK4 is a pocket pistol, first introduced by Heckler & Koch in 1967. Government agencies received 12,000 pistols in the .32 ACP caliber with the designation P11 and were serial numbered 40001 to 52400.[citation needed]

The H&K Model 4 was named for the fact that it was offered in four different calibers – .22LR, .25 ACP, .32 ACP, and .380 ACP. The gun came with a complete set of spare barrels and magazines to allow conversion between all of them, and interesting feature not offered by any other pistols like it at the time. The design was by Alex Seidel, one of the founding engineers of H&K. He had familiarity with the Mauser HSc from his time working at Mauser, and it was the rough basis fo the HK4.
